Proposal Topic: Social justice and access to Health Care
Despite major revisions to health care insurance options, there are still 32 million uninsured Americans in the United States in 2015.
(http://kff.org/uninsured/fact-sheet/key-facts-about-the-uninsured-population/) This startling statistic brings up a number of questions for todays policy makers and citizens alike. Why are people uninsured? If an individual is not insured how does this impact his or her ability to access quality health care? Does access to health care vary across key demographic groups and socioeconomic groups, thus drawing conclusions that are related to social justice issues? Do military veterans have issues with access to health care? Is universal access to health care an appropriate goal for a country such as America? Are there moral and ethical obligations to consider in regard to universal health care? I believe that this is a good topic to explore in this class because of the interconnectedness between access to care and social justice issues. The nexus of both of these issues will result in an exploration on how prevalent the issue is, potential solutions that have improved the problem thus far and remaining challenges.
