Identify a person whose life has been altered because of trauma or illness. This person may not be someone you have known prior to contacting them for the interview.  After review of issues of confidentiality, biases and stigmatization of disability with the patient/client, refer to the assignment guidelines below to help you conduct an appropriate interview. Feel free to expand upon the interview guidelines remembering to remain respectful.  Explain the purpose and obtain the person’s permission prior to the interview.

The student will provide a narrative of approximately 2-3 pages (typed and double-spaced; 12 point font; 1 inch margins) which aIDresses the following questions:

1. What is this person’s story? Elaborate on his/her feelings, motivations, thoughts, beliefs, reactions, and behaviors as he/she went through the experience of illness.

2. What was the impact of the environment (physical, social, familial, etc.) on the patient’s illness? What was the impact of the illness on the patient’s environment?

3. Can you identify any group or family roles that were challenged or brought into conflict through this encounter?

4. What was your reaction to the interview? What did you learn from this patient?
