WARNING: Many students think that they know what they are doing and do not read these
instructions carefully or at all. Many of these students come to me lost or confused about what
to do with only one week or less left to do the assignment. When I ask if they have read the
directions for the paper, they look at me with a blank stare. Because they are unprepared and
do a rushed job, usually their papers get a C- or less. Don’t be one of those students! Do not
ask me about this assignment until you have read every word in these instructions.
The purpose of this assignment is to teach students the critical differences between a popular
press psychology article—like one found in a newspaper, magazine or the internet—and a
professional psychology journal research article. It is about comparing the kinds of articles, the
format of the articles, and the style in which the articles are written. It is not about the specific
topic or subject matter, although that is an interesting bonus for you. This writing assignment
is to compose a paper in which you compare-and-contrast the format and style of a
popular psychology article with an academic psychology research article. It is designed
(1) to make you more familiar with a professional psychology research article; (2) to give you
practice with using the resources of a college library, in person or online; (3) to improve your
formal academic writing skills; (4) to improve your critical thinking skills; (5) to allow you to
apply some of what you have learned in class; and (6) to give you an opportunity to earn up to
50 points.
What you must do (everything stated in this document is required, no exceptions):
1) Choose a specific psychology question or topic of strong interest which will motivate you.
2) Find a POPULAR psychology or science article that attempts to answer your specific
question or closely addresses your specific topic. This must be from a nationally recognized
and reputable newspaper, magazine or internet source such as a daily newspaper from a major
U.S. city, or from established periodicals such as Scientific American Mind, Scientific
American, Discover, American Psychologist, Psychology Today, Time, Newsweek, U.S. News
& World Report or Science News. Also, it may be from a chapter in a popular science
nonfiction book that has been published since 2015 (not from a textbook or technical book).
Read the article or chapter, analyze its format and style, then summarize your research topic or
question in your own words.
You must attach to your paper an active link to, or electronic file of, the popular article or
book chapter to get any credit for your paper. No link to or file of the popular article, no
credit, no exceptions.
3) Next, find an ACADEMIC RESEARCH PSYCHOLOGY JOURNAL ARTICLE.
Professional academic journals are scholarly “magazines” for academics to publish their
research. They are not a popular form of media; you won’t find them in a bookstore or in the
checkout lane at the supermarket. A journal contains academic or research articles or reports.
Most journals are available online and individual articles may be downloaded, although
articles from before 2000 may not yet be scanned into digital form. Usually, one must use an
academic online service, such as EBSCO or PubMed, to view or to download full journal articles
(see directions for this below). You might look for one of the journal articles written by a
researcher who was cited in your popular article. For instance, if a research psychologist was
quoted in the popular article, use that scientist’s name and the topic on which he or she was
interviewed to search for the professional journal article he or she wrote. Examine the article to
make sure it is a full original research article, not just an abstract (a brief summary of the full
article).
IMPORTANT: Do not use a review or perspective paper that contains no methods section. That
is not original research. Use only original research papers that contain the results of
experiments or other scientific research.
You must attach to your paper an active link to, or electronic file of, the academic research
journal article to get any credit for your paper. No link to or file of the journal article, no
credit, no exceptions.
4) Planning your paper. Ask yourself, what are the different ways that the popular and journal
articles are written? What different kinds of information do they present and in what ways? For
instance, what is different about the sections of the articles, their formats and styles of writing?
What audiences do the authors address? What needs do they try to satisfy? In general, for each
kind of article, what goals do the authors try to achieve? How does the different composition
of each kind of article contribute to those goals? Be sure to allow enough time to read each
article thoroughly to experience their differences fully, and to think about them, even if you
have a difficult time understanding the journal article. Nothing beats careful observation
followed by reflection to understand your subject deeply.
5) Writing your paper. To satisfy the requirements of this paper, you will write at least three

6) Your paper’s format. Write in clear prose. Write a draft, proofread it, edit it, and rewrite it. I
suggest you read your paper aloud or give it to a friend to read to catch errors. Do not make an
outline (no credit). You must upload to Canvas an electronic version. The electronic file must
be in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx files), Adobe PDF, or a file translated into Word (e.g., a
Google Docs file can be saved as a Word file). DO NOT SUBMIT a link to a webpage or to a
Google Doc. The file must consist of no more than 2 pages of text plus the Works Cited page
(no more than 3 pages total) with double-spaced lines, 1.25” margins all around, using Times
Roman or Times New Roman font, 12-point.
Upload your file by the start of the final exam. No handwritten papers or cloud files get
credit.
7) Library research is part of this assignment. Use sources, references and citations. In your
paper, you must support your statements of fact or other main claims with sources of
information. These sources must be cited in the body (main text) of your paper at the end of
the sentence in which you make a claim or statement of fact, or at the end of a paragraph which
contains several such statements all from the same source. Also, these references must be listed
on a separate Works Cited page at the end of your paper. To do all this, follow American
Psychological Association (APA) style, based on the APA style manual. This is called “using
APA style.” Use the LAVC Library and online resources to learn more about proper APA

You must investigate more on your own. This library research is part of the assignment. You
will be graded on the quality and correct APA form of your citations and references in the
body of your paper and in the reference page at the end. Here is a summary of steps to take if

6. If you wish to refine your search further, use the Databases button. You might select newspaper or
articles. Since you have your popular press article, you should select Scholarly & Peer-reviewed.
7. You will see the Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection (EBSCO) link. Click that to get the
EBSCO login. Use the username and password that you use to access the online LAVC/LACCD Student
Information System, the one that you used to enroll in classes. Your username and password should have
been issued to you when you enrolled at any LACCD college, likely LAVC if this is your first class in the
LACCD system. If you do not have your username and password, you must get them before you can go
any further.
8. At the EBSCO search window, type in your topic key words, for example “love writing college
papers.” You will note that suggested combinations of key words are offered. If you know the author(s)
for whom you are searching, or the specific journal article title, enter those.
9. In the EBSCO database, full texts of articles are not available until one calendar year after their
publication.

person’s words or ideas without attribution, that is, attempting to claim—or make it look
