1. a) Let’s consider a mixing tank. Two pure component streams, component A and component B enter
the tank. Let’s assume that you want to control the composition of the component A in the mixture
leaving the tank by an automatic controller.
Let’s also assume that the flow of the pure component A entering the tank is fixed and that of the
pure component B can be adjusted.
Identify the Manipulated variable, Controlled variable, error in the above process.

b) Let’s consider a heat exchanger. At the steady state, the cooling rate of the hot fluid is equal to the
heating rate of the cold fluid.
When the flowrate of the hot fluid increases, more heat is transferred to the cold fluid and the outlet
temperature of the cold fluid is increased.
The change in the outlet temperature of the cold fluid is gradual. As the size of the heat exchanger
increases, the rate of change in the outlet temperature of the cold fluid becomes: (4 Marks)
