For this assignment, in addition to reviewing the text of chapter 9, read carefully both Document 9.1 (by Agnolo the Fat) on page 268, and the Black Death introduction and document (by Jean de Venette) attached below. Then, with specific references to the documents, write an essay addressing the following:

(1) Analyze/Reflect: Why and how did the Black Death come to and spread through Europe so effectively (briefly answer)? How did various medieval Europeans interpret and react to the plague and how did they assess its long-term moral, social, and economic consequences? (Your discussion of the second question should be the more developed one, and should include at least three specific references from the documents.)

(2) Connect: How might a sudden catastrophe of similar scale in our own time produce both similar and different reactions and consequences? (Offer some speculative examples.)
