SOCIO 120 Diablo Valley College HW-3 Social Institution: Religion This assignment requires only lecture, a chapter from one of the two textbooks, and No Apparent Distress (NAD). It is
meant to build on what you have done in Homework 1 and Homework 2 and to help you identify and explore stratification
processes within social institutions. At a minimum, you must use NAD and either lecture or a chapter from one of the
textbooks, which are both available on Canvas. You may also use Henslins social institution table and other class
handouts. DO NOT USE ANY OUTSIDE MATERIALS TO COMPLETE THIS ASSIGNMENT.I am sorry but I dont have the book which is No Apparent Distress?I can try find it if u need?First file is require?2 and 3 are sample A essay?4 is focus questions? SOCIO-120 HW-3 Focus Outline
1) How would a fundamental sociological theoryfunctionalist, conflict, or symbolic interaction
explain stratification processes in the social institution you chose (or were assigned)?
The powerpoints have some information on this, but you will need to combine how the theories see the
social institutions overall with how the theories see stratification to explain how a fundamental
sociological theory would see stratification in regards to the social institution. You do not have to present
all three theories. I am looking for quality of the explanation rather than quantity of the theories
2) How does the institution include stratification components that we have encountered in class?
This question involves looking at the four stratification modules (7, 8, 9, and 10) and finding aspects that
contribute to inequality within or across the social institution. Each module has focused on different
aspects of inequality
Module 7) what kind of system exists and different factors in the systems (we are in the U.S., so class and
status hierarchy are most appropriate for this assignment. You will not find supporting examples in NAD
for the others, but you could compare/contrast using sociological imagination if you want
)
Module 8) income or wealth inequality and the factors associated with that inequality
Module 9) racial or ethnic inequality and related factors
Module 10) gender inequality, including sexuality and sexual orientation and related factors
3) How are people with different statuses affected or regarded differently by or within the
institution?
This question relates to social location, so it focuses on how different SES classes, occupations, marital
statuses, races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, etc. experience, are affected by, or seen by the
social institution.
Define or explain Unit 3 sociological terms and make explicit links between sociological concepts in the
unit on stratification and examples from NAD that illustrate your points. Use examples from NAD,
lecture, and a textbook to illustrate and support the sociological concepts. Make sure you cite the
page numbers (or location if an e-book) from NAD.
This sheet is meant to help you identify what you want to include before you start writing your paper. You cant
include everything we have had in UNIT 3, so youll need to focus

1000 OF YOUR OWN WORDS minimum
(100 points)
DONT FORGET YOUR WORD-COUNT!!
This assignment requires only lecture, a chapter from one of the two textbooks, and No Apparent Distress (NAD). It is
meant to build on what you have done in Homework 1 and Homework 2 and to help you identify and explore stratification
processes within social institutions. At a minimum, you must use NAD and either lecture or a chapter from one of the
textbooks, which are both available on Canvas. You may also use Henslins social institution table and other class
handouts. DO NOT USE ANY OUTSIDE MATERIALS TO COMPLETE THIS ASSIGNMENT.
First, choose one of the following social institutions appearing in NAD: family (including marriage), education, health
care, or religion. Next, review the definition and explanations of a social institution using information from the lecture
Powerpoints and the Henslin handout from class Social Institutions Revisited (Henslin 2014). Once you have chosen
your social institution, use sociological concepts to inform your paper. Make sure you clearly identify the social
institution you are writing about in your essay. You must cite material from NAD in your paper and you must cite
lecture material or one of the textbookss. If you refer to the Henslin handout, you must cite it as well. Powerpoints
on family, education, religion, and health care are posted on Canvas. Materials from the textbooks are also posted
on Canvas. Incorporating material from all of these sources will likely result in a higher score.
As always, you are expected to use the sociological imagination and sociological concepts. Make sure you address
the following three questions: 1) How would a fundamental sociological theoryfunctionalist, conflict, or symbolic
interactionexplain stratification processes in the social institution you chose? 2) How does the institution(s) include
stratification components that we have encountered in class? 3) How are people with different statuses affected or
regarded differently by or within the institution(s)? This question relates to social location. Define or explain Unit 3
sociological terms and make explicit links between sociological concepts in the unit on stratification and examples from
NAD that illustrate your points. Use examples from NAD, lecture, and a textbook to illustrate and support the
sociological concepts. Make sure you cite the page numbers (or location if an e-book) from NAD.
As you write, demonstrate fluency in the language of sociology. Focus on concepts related to our unit on stratification:
systems, income, gender, and race and ethnicity. Use sociological terms from the stratification unit in your explanation,
and demonstrate that you are using them correctly by defining them and giving an illustrative example from NAD.
Applying sociological theory, understanding how different people experience social institutions differently
according to Sociology and using sociological terms correctly are keys to successful completion of this assignment.
If you use ideas or words that are not your own, make sure you quote or cite them properly. Make sure you
include your word-count. Read the general instructions for writing assignments at the end of the syllabus and
posted on Canvas.
Your assignment needs to be saved as a Windows text filedoc or docx preferred (NO Mac pages file, NO Google Docs,
NO picture files), and handed in through Canvas Homework 3 before 6:30:00pm on 3/14/19. Early-bird submission
deadline is before 6:30pm 3/12/19 (+5 points). Late submission is before 6:30pm Sunday, 3/17/19 (-10 points). No
submissions accepted after the automatic, 72-hour extension expires.

by the evidence. Although this is not a writing class and I will not be grading for writing per-se, a poorly written paper
can often detract from the ideas you are trying to express. Exemplar papers are posted on Canvas.
CITATIONS USE ONLY MATERIAL FROM NAD AND THIS CLASS. You must give credit to your sources of
information by citing them properly (Sociology follows A.P.A. style, but you can use M.L.A or another style as long as
its correctly used). If you cite any information obtained solely from class lecture, include a citation. Cite it as
Sociology 120 lecture notes, Using or quoting information from your sources without citation will result
in a lower grade or even a zero for the assignment. Citations for books are posted on Canvas, so easy to copy-paste.
Papers are automatically processed by an originality-checking service and a report is generated documenting how much of
the paper is not original work. Papers are then evaluated for possible plagiarism. Do your own work and cite your
sourcesespecially if you quote or paraphrase. You may need to increase your word-count to make up for quoted
material. You got your information to complete this assignment from somewhere beside the inside of your head, so you
need to have at least two citations from 1) NAD, 2) lecture and handouts, 3) one of the textbooks.
ONE must be NAD.
MAKE SURE YOU CITE NAD AND LECTURE / TEXTBOOKS.
Following these instructions is a key to the assignment. Cite pages referencedespecially in NAD. I need to be able to see if you
made correct connections between sources. You will not receive a passing score if you do not follow the instructions.

SOCIO120: Homework Assignment 3, Spring 2019
Socio 120

Homework 3
I chose health and society (Ch. 11) as the social institution to focus on. Since health is
obviously crucial, it is important for everyone to have equal rights to it. However, there is
unfortunately just as much stratification, or inequality, in the healthcare field as there is
anywhere else. Since stratification is not considered random, it is in fact considered systematic
(done according to a fixed plan), some may say that inequality in healthcare is necessary. Seeing
as healthcare has its own stratification, there tends to be a type of hierarchy where people who
are higher up are rewarded, and people who are towards the bottom of the hierarchy are not.
It is common for people who maintain a higher social status to have more privileges
when it comes to health compared to those who have a lower status. For example, a person who
has more prestige or a ranking of how much respect/esteem a position has will often have
more options when it comes to choosing a doctor or even a specific treatment. People who are at
a higher status will most likely have more say and control in their health and/or treatment than a
person of a lower status. Not to mention, people of higher statuses are generally wealthy, which
means they will probably also have more advantage when it comes to affording expensive
treatments or other health care needs.
With people of lower statuses, they tend to be poor which results in them, in an attempt to
save money, going to free clinics as opposed to paying much more money to see a specific
primary care giver. A majority of lower status people may also have no type of insurance. This
can put up a huge barrier when it comes to their options for healthcare. These people do not get
any of the many privileges that people of higher status get. In fact, most of the time they are not
able to even pick their own doctor or be involved in their health. They take what they can get
since they have little to no money and/or no insurance.
