In this unit, we will examine the causes and consequences of families in poverty. Different types of poverty and the negative effects it has on children will be discussed. We will also look at family systems theory and its application to family.

Topic 1: “Severe deprivation in America: An introduction”

What is the difference between poverty and severe deprivation? What policy changes should be put in place to help the poor? What does the author mean by a “new poverty agenda”?

Topic 2: “Unmarried with Children”

Why do poor women put off marriage? If you cannot afford to have a child, it is fair to the child? Should single mothers be required to take a parenting class? Why or why not? Do you agree that poor women expect more out of men financially than more affluent women? Explain your answer.
