Satire: A Voice for Social Change Discussion Topic?Satire is or is not a vehicle for social change. Try to writing 7-8 paragraphs Opinion Editorial and Satirical Analysis (SLO 1 – analyzing and critiquing college-level works and
synthesizing information into an extended analytical essay. SLO 2 – compose reasoned arguments with
relevant support)
Write an opinion-editorial taking a stance on satire and its usefulness in inciting social change or
its place in perpetuating social issues. Support your stance by analyzing a piece of satire either in
favor of satire’s usefulness or against it. The essay should include a short summary of the work being
used to help audiences understand its value and make sense of why you chose it. Analyze the work and
identify at least 1-2 techniques of satire (comedic elements), and explain how those techniques
contribute to the criticisms (of society) being made by the work for each element that is identified,
such as reversal or mockery, there should be an accompanying example from the work that illustrates
how it contributes to the message the work is trying to send and whether it succeeded or not (this is your
opinion).
You may choose to analyze any work of satire that you wish: Colbert Report, Saturday Night Live, The
Onion, The Daily Show, Family Guy, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, a song, a music video, a tv
show, a film, a novel, stand-up comedy acts, etc.
Your thesis statement should state your stance clearly, and your body should support your stance by
using examples. You are welcome to use more than one piece of satire for supportive examples, but I
only require one.
Guidelines: Write a fully developed thesis-driven essay answering all parts of the prompt. The essay
must be 4-6 double-spaced pages in length. You will need to use multiple forms of support to support
your stance. This can include: details, personal experiences, readings, statistics, expert opinions,
surveys, multiple satirical works, etc. You must use at least one satirical work (though you may end
up with more than one). Make sure to add Essay #1 to your title. This essay must be in MLA format,
including the Work Cited Page and in-text citations (SLO 2).
