they always want to know

I tell them I’m from Stockton,

But in my heart I know I’m from New Orleans.

Where I’m from, I’m not allowed to be from

I wasn’t born or raised there,

A hurricane interrupted my chance to earn my birthright.

Where I come from they eat red beans and rice on Mondays

We watch parades from the neutral ground on Napoleon

And I “make groceries” at the A & P.

You would believe me if you knew, “I bleed purple and gold!” (Links to an external site.)

Where I’m from is the corner of Fourth and Camp,

And where South Scott meets Canal.

I grew up in New Orleans.

I smelled humidity soaked flowers bloom

and drench the air with the sweet scent of magnolias and honeysuckle,

And I saw friends get lost in the democratic, always-open, we’ll-accept-anyone-bars

On the cocaine laden dark side of Decatur.

Where I’m from, you walk down the street, you look people in the eye and smile.

In the beginning, you smile in alliance, gratitude and acknowledgement

and say “Morning” to you elders

Then you learn to purse your lips, open your eyes wide with power

And offer up the head nod in feigned respect as you pass the company of men

Where I’m from, you have to tell people you won’t be a victim.

Where I’m from we eat at Theo’s Pizza, Juan’s Flying Burrito and Dante’s Kitchen.

Where I’m from we eat whatever we want, drink more than we should

And then drive home through narrow, pothole spotted streets

Lined with oak trees, shotguns and run down camel back houses.

Where I’m from porch sittin’ is an art and excess is never enough.

Where I’m from there are natives, and then there’s everyone else.

There are transients and gutter punks, west bankers and blind tourists.

Where I’m from there are kings of krewes and widows of the projects.

Where I’m from darkness lasts longer than decades

The battles of fine cultures, greedy nations and blended races emerge

In the jazz lit smoky nightclub, on the iron laced balconies

From the tears of those whose heart the city devours.

Where I’m from we dance in the streets as the trumpet parades death (Links to an external site.)

Where I’m from will quietly swallow your soul as the bartender pours your dividend.

And if, when, you turn your back on her

You depart broken, longing, nostalgic

Knowing that this place, this violent sinking city has the power to ruin,

but no where else on the planet will ever be home.

(Approach #2 George Ella Lyon: shorter, straightforward documentation high school season of my life/learning)

I’m from the classroom, the campus – from diplomas and degrees. An Eagle, an Aztec and a Tiger – I bleed purple and gold. I’m from Honors English and a D in Algebra, from The Great Gatsby and Grapes of Wrath, from Caddy and Daisy and reading by the light of the glovebox.

I come from Ethel and Joe, from “work first, play later.” Bike rides down Arcade St. during summers at grandma’s house, grilled cheese and sliced tomatoes, and painting the garage. I’m from crawfish in the creek and cartwheels on the lawn.

I’m from Chili-cheese Fritos and Big Hunk – ranch dippin’ and Tiger Yogurt lickin’. Bus rides to Forest Lake and “Let’s go Lady Knights!” losing in the first round… I’m from weekend visitation and Carl’s Jr. dates with dad, Santa Cruz saltwater and Delta sunsets.

I come from thrift and save, from hand-me-downs and “Don’t throw that away…” I come from Gunne Sax and Esprit, from gold stars and black marks, student council and journalism – Vote for Marla! I’m from volleyball and swimming, from windsprints, quicksets and aces.

I’m from chapel on Wednesdays and “Come, Holy Sprit come” on Sundays. From divorce and cancer, and sneaking off to bed without saying goodnight. “You had Cinderella memorized at the age of two”, my mama always told me. But I hate Disney…

I’m from books and words, fiction and tales. I’m from Stockton (Links to an external site.) and Narnia. I come from monkey bars and Mimosa tree climbin’, night jasmine and fog penetrating the farm soil on Highway 26. I’m from memories, imagination and daydreaming.

Assessing the Rhetorical Situation:

In life beyond the university, life after RWS 305W, there will likely be countless times where you will need to investigate and learn to write for an unfamiliar genre. From presenting a professional summary to formatting a curriculum vitae, one thing writers in the real world have to do is understand genre, form and rhetorical success and then participate in that genre.

For this assignment, you will be assessing “Where I’m From” as a genre, asking what do these writers do? The goal is to craft your own “Where I’m From” post as an individual blog on Blackboard. Your audience is your fellow classmates and your instructor. Your goal is to explore where you are from, or a place or origin or focus that has influenced who you are. In this blog you will replicate the style of this genre and contribute original information in this creative way so that our class can become a community of learners rather than online strangers.

Learning outcomes for this assignment:

To demonstrate the ability to learn from published mentor texts and then craft a description of where you come from in the borrowed style for an online audience.
To provide a vehicle for others in the class community to know who you are and contribute to an inclusive class culture.

Instructions for Composing & Submitting Your Blog:

Your profile must include certain content, described below, in order to be considered complete. You should compose and revise your text on a working document, so that you can freely edit before copying and pasting or retyping into the space

Content:

TEXT
The text should be 300-500 words, single-spaced. When you hit return, an extra space is automatically added, so that between your paragraphs it is double-spaced.
The goal of this blog is to accomplish two major things: learn style and genre from published professionals that you can replicate, and to explore and share your views on where you’re from.
Note: You will need a title, but you do not need to introduce yourself by name in your opening line, or construct any kind of artificial introduction or header – just jump right in.
PHOTOS
Insert one to three images in any place you feel appropriate (before text, after text, as a break in the text). These images can be photos of yourself or of anything else that you feel appropriately represents where you are from; you can use the stock pictures available or upload your own image.
To upload an image, click on the corresponding “landscape” icon on the toolbar and a box will come up prompting you to browse your computer for the image you wish to post. Be sure to upload the image, not attach it.
The photos you choose should be saved as .jpeg and Canvas will automatically format it in your Discussion post.
LINKS
Within your text paragraphs, provide the names of two websites that you want to share with the class. The importance of each website should be clear and integrated into your narrative. These sites could be associated with your personal and/or professional interests; they may be informational, maps, videos or anything relevant to your topic. It’s up to you: the sites you choose to include will reveal more information about where you’re from and what matters to you. Please do not share sites that require login in order to experience them (ie, Facebook, Linkedin, etc).
To embed a hyperlink to these sites, type in the name of the site or title you see fit (not the URL), select it, and click on the chain toolbar icon for inserting a hyperlink. A window will pop up where you can copy the URL of your site. Click on the box that will open your link in a separate window. Then click “submit” and your link will become active. (Note: it will not be active until you post your entry, so do not be alarmed when nothing happens while you are still composing the entry.) Where I’m from, “the earth is blue like an orange” and Paul Éluard is buried between a German
art dealer and the pioneer of the telegraph. We keep hope enshrined in a box and guard it with a
rusted shovel.
On Sundays, we serve melon in a bowl to the Bishop reading dirty paperbacks and overlook his
private delirium. Things like that happen here. All the time.
Where I’m from, despair is measured in metric units and no one takes notice of the Russian
hookers outside the patisserie, lined up like porcelain dolls in an antique shop.
Instead, we outlaw handguns and worship Sartre and buy wooden ponies for children we will
never have.
I’m from a place where the fathers of phonetics take long strolls in parched robes, from
République to Gare du Nord, smoking filtered cigarettes and burning encyclopedias.
Every spring the streets give way to April and the tourist are shipped in, whistling clichés and
playing gin rummy in the dark on rainy days. We tolerate them here. We give them room. We sit
up till dawn, picking the grit of metropolis out of our teeth, wondering what will become of us.
Where I’m from, farewell looks different in the afternoon and the Museum of Contemporary
History is exhibiting the remains of every man I’ve ever loved.
No one lives here. We just abide. We chose a shady bench and study Fermat’s last theorem, or
cartography, or we join a full-horned band and write postcards to tell our families that joy is
overrated. Despite their envy.
I’m from a place where people writhe.
I come from the reign of Louis and the balustrade and a hidden café on the corner of St. Martin
that serves whiskey until 2 a.m., while the revolution hums softly in the background.
This is where Nina Simone died in eight feet of light, where I broke my wrist, where memories
are handpicked and Jesus loves you or loves you not. It’s the orphanage to every book that made
me cry.
Where I’m from, I wasn’t born. It is not my domicile, nor my nation, nor my home.
It’s the only place that I belong.
By Dede Fraser
Land of Illusions
When asked by many where my point of origin lies, difficulty to provide a clear answer ensues.
For there is not one place, but in fact many
Places some will recognize, others some will not
A fixed journey through the manufactured.
I am from the dark regions of space,
Found and recruited by the legendary Commander Shepard,
On board the SSV Normandy alongside companions Garrus Vakarian, Jeff “Joker” Moreau, and many
more.
Fighting to accomplish the impossible, traversing where none have returned and coming back ready for the
next mission.
My journey here taught me that nothing was impossible, to go against the odds and fight for what’s right.
I was raised in the desert of the twin suns’,
Taught the many wisdoms of Grand master Yoda and Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Training alongside the future legend that would be Luke Skywalker on Dagobah,
Fighting and growing with him, on his path to the light from the deserts of Tatooine to the jungles of
Endor.
These teachings showed me to not let my anger fog my judgement, to be level headed and at peace, to “Do
or do not, there is no try”- Master Yoda “The Empire Strikes Back”.
I was educated at the ancient strongholds of Hogwarts and Kaer Morhen,
Under the guidance of the Wizard Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, and the Witcher Vesemir,
Alongside with living legends Harry Potter and Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon,
And under the mentorship from Severus Snape for Slytherin house, and Geralt of Rivia for the School of
the wolf,
There I was taught to value those around me, to not bottle up emotion, and to cherish the time I have with
those I value most, for time is limited.
I was accepted as part of a family in the city of Magnolia,
Lost physically and mentally, broken from betrayal, wishing for death to rid me of this pain and neverending isolation.
However, I was found and shown that hope still existed by Guild master Makarov,
There I was offered a place into the Fairy Tail family, he saw me not as the screw up or the awful person
everyone including myself pictured,
But simply a person who wants to better himself and repent for past sins.
I was accepted unanimously by everyone despite my darkened choices and wrong doings,
I finally felt at home, with friends like Natsu, Gray, Erza, Juvia, and Lucy; who I am proud to call my
family.
This acceptance showed me to not view the world as black and white, but instead in shades of gray, to see
the good in everyone despite the preceded past,
And it also showed me to never give up, to persevere even when in rock bottom.
I am from the land of illusions,
A digitized exodus from the harshest of realities,
Despite my points of origin being non-existent and virtual,
It shaped me to be who I am today.
And it’s gotten me through some of the many hurdle’s life has to offer.
Where I am From
The blue sky the cold water and the salty
beaches; with the short shorts, rainbow
sandals and the shirtless bodies; that’s the
place I am from.
The place where I am from is right next to
the border down south where they have the
best tacos and the cheapest beer you’ll ever
find.
The place where I am from has the green
grass and the kids enjoy it during summer
time; playing ball, making teams, and
competing against each other.
I am from the so called Golden State; the
American dream, dream? Solo un sueno,
a dream that doesn’t exist.
How is it a dream when you give up your
life and your family?
When your daddy works two jobs and he
only comes home to see his kids asleep?
Every time I see this scene I remember my
little sister saying “ I miss my daddy,
doesn’t he love us anymore?”
Is this the American dream? I see it reflected
upon my mom’s wrinkles that say “I am 54
years old” she is barely 42 and she keeps on
struggling through work, day and night, she
is losing her sight.
Is this a dream? More like a nightmare when
all I see is my family fighting and
complaining because there is not enough
money for rent. There never is.
Could someone tell me what is the
American dream? Because I don’t see it
happening, at least not in my family.
I really miss the place where I was raised…
Yo soy de dirty beaches and the dark sky,
where you cannot see the daylight due to the
smog in our eyes.
Michelle Aceves
Yo soy de un place where you wake up to
the daily news with: “ lo secuestraron, la
violaron, los mataron”. There is nothing we
can do to stop the crime because the cops
form part of it too.
Yo soy de “ Michelle ayudame a planchar y
a cosinar”. At least my mom was right next
to me, always by my side.
Yo soy de the old man yielding in the corner
of the street “paletas, papitas, bolis, chicles”
trying to make a dollar to feed his familia.
Yo soy de “ No ahy dinero” but I am going
to buy something ‘nice’ to wear to go to
church.
I am not from the north nor the south. The
place where I am from divides two worlds.
These worlds are so close together, yet so
far apart.
The place I am from it diverse it has the
fresas from the north and the ghetto from the
south.
The place I am from is filled with
discrimination but we all ought to realize we
form part of the same nation.
The place where I am from goes from the
minimum wages to no jobs at all; from the
comprades y vecinos to not knowing your
neighbors at all.
From the hot tortillas, frijoles y tacos to
horchata y futbol; Spanglish is my language.
That’s the culture I come from.
From the crazy fanatics of the super bowl,
the “ this is the president I vote for” to pizza,
hamburgers and wild friends. That’s the
place where I am from. My home.

When asked the question “Where did you grow up” I debate my possible answers
I can explain that where I grew up all four seasons come and go
And Freedom, Liberty, and brotherhood flow through the streets like
The crisp air on a brightly colored fall morning
I can also claim that where I grew up
Each and every day was summer
The stars where in the streets not in the skies
And everyone has a dream but few ever achieve it
But the truth is where I grew up was not a place but rather a sport
Where I grew up the smell of sweat and tears filled the air
Cold mornings and late nights
Spending more time with Mrs. Irina then with my own family
Where I grew up broken ankles and arms were a monthly thing
Wrists and knees have permanent marks from tape and braces
Hands are calloused beyond repair
Muscles are always sore
As are the hearts that lay beneath them
Where I grew up fairy tale stories are replaced by Olympic fantasies
The word “can’t” isn’t in the vocabulary
The sounds of screaming coaches saying, “Point your toes, pretty hands, big smile”
And bodies banging against wooden beams
Was music to our ears
Where I grew up we were the Barbie dolls
Legs pulled in either direction
Bodies put into unnatural positions, splits and backbends
Each of us constantly striving to reach that perfect 10
Where I grew up repetition was the key
Back handsprings, kips and giants drilled into us so that we never forgot them
Routines done over and over again till we dreamed of them in the little sleep we got
The song stuck in my head was not that of a popular artist
But rather an instrumental version of the “can can”
Where I grew up Halloween wasn’t for candy and summer did not involve vacations
The only celebrities we knew of were Mary Lou, Shannon and Nadia
We didn’t watch cartoons, but sat glued to our T.V’s once every four years
We all had different friends but shared the same seven sisters
And each of us had the same favorite color, gold
Where I grew up hope courage and determination were imbedded into
Strong yet flexible little bodies
The philosophy of “Pain is only temporary, glory is forever”
Woven into our gleaming leotards
The definition of fun was always trying one’s best
And winning meant never giving up
Where I grew up
