PSY 101 Colorado State University Global Forces and Motion Physics Lab Report This week you have a virtual lab to complete. Below you will find the
forces in motion simulation. Use the worksheet to guide you through the
simulation to complete the lab. I have provided the link to this lab below and attached the questionnaire:https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/legacy/for… Forces in Motion
Use the Forces in Motion: Basics simulation to perform this lab. Click the Friction tab at
the bottom to begin.
1.
In the default setting you are applying a force to a box to push the box across the floor. Check all the boxes in
the top right box. Apply a force by sliding the controller at the bottom to the right a little. Watch what happens to
the free body diagram on the box. Record the two forces depicted in the diagram and what they mean. What two
forces are not depicted?
2.
Now, apply enough force until the box moves. How does the force of friction change when the filing cabinet
starts to move?
3.
Lets explore the force of friction a little more. Add some weight to the box by clicking on the girl and placing her
on the box. Find the force needed to overcome the force of friction and get the box moving. Then find the applied
force needed to create a sum of forces that equals 0. This is the force of friction once the object is moving.
4.
Why does the force of friction decrease when the box starts moving?
5.
Now click on the Acceleration tab at the bottom. For this simulation you need to record three phases the box
not moving, the box moving, and the box moving a little faster. Make sure all items in the box at the top right are
checked and the friction level is in the middle. Fill in the table below as you change the applied force. Start by
applying a force that you know from the previous simulation will not cause the box to move. Next, apply a greater
force so the box begins to move. Finally, apply a greater force.
Applied Force (N)
Sum of Force (N)
Speed (m/s)
Acceleration (m/s2)
Before movement
Slow movement
Faster movement
6.
Describe how to get a constant velocity without an increasing acceleration in the simulation.
7.
Clear the simulation. Decrease friction to none. Apply a force and then stop. What happens to the box when
the applied force drops to 0. Explain your answer.
8.
Check the speed and acceleration boxes on the right and perform the same simulation with no friction. Explain
what happens to the velocity and acceleration when the force is first applied, and when the force stops being
applied.
