This assignment should be at least 1500 words in length. Grading of the paper will be based on

Essay Topics
Choose one of the topics below for your paper.
1. Northrop Frye has argued that the presentation of main characters in literature has
passed through four stages. In his first stage (up to circa 1066 C.E.) main characters
often have supernatural qualities or abilities. In his second stage (up to circa 1495 C.E.)
main characters often represent an abstract quality or ideal of some kind of perfection.
In his 3rd stage (up to circa 1760 C.E.) main characters were of the higher classes, but
were definitely ordinary humans. In his 4th stage, main characters are human, and are
often from the lower classes, are animals or are children.
Describe the development of drama over the centuries by using Fryes four stages to
describe them. Support your answer with reference to at least four plays (one for each
stage) from the list below.
2. In Elizabethan England, plays were often monitored for subversive social content.
Elizabeth herself famously said I am Richard II, know ye not that. How has drama
always expressed political stances or subversive content? Support your answer with
reference to at least four plays (each from a different historical period) from the list
below.
3. Ancient Greek Drama developed from religious rituals and ceremonies. Medieval
drama also developed from religious ceremonies. 17th century French Farce, however,
was influenced by street performances of the commedia dell arte, and 20 th century
drama has been heavily influence by other popular media. What does this tell us about
the development of drama over the centuries? Support your answer with reference to at
least four plays (each from a different historical period) from the list below.
4. Although Shakespeares play, Othello, has been described as a domestic tragedy,
many critics argue that domestic drama doesnt become widespread until the naturalists
(Ibsen, Strindberg, and Chekhov) emerge. How has domestic drama always been a
feature of drama? Support your answer with reference to at least four plays (each from
a different historical period) from the list below.
