Personal, Academic, and Professional Goals/Personal Qualities Please describe your intrest in pursuing a counseling degree and also please explain why now is the right time to start? 

  I first became interested in Human Services as an adolescent.  It was during that time that I decided I would dedicate my life toward meeting people’s needs by focusing on prevention as well as remediation of mental problems which would help to improve one’s overall quality of life.  As a result of this dedication, when it came time for me to choose my major as an undergraduate, the natural choice was psychology. Human Services is the only field for me because it is a career that requires compassion, respect and a deep rooted kindness for others. These are qualities, along with my understanding of the human mind and behavior and my desire to help hurting people, are the qualities that I will use to help the people I serve. Now is the right time to pursue my degree becuase I’ve learned that I must put me first.  I no longer allow outside stresses to be reflected in my academics.  

What influenced you to choose this field?  

 My interested was sparked when a family member of mine was diagnosed with a mental health issue called schizophrenia. As a 10 year old child, I didn’t know what was all entailed in the disease, but I did know that my uncle was suffering, and I wanted to do anything that I could to help him. It was during that time that I decided I would dedicate my life toward meeting people’s needs by focusing on prevention as well as remediation of mental problems which would help to improve one’s overall quality of life.  Please describe your interest in the specific program (and specialization if applicable) to which you are applying. Please note that your goals or reasons should be in line with the program and specialization to which you are applying.    I have had the pleasure of working for some of the top facilities for Human Services such as The Jewish Board of Family and Children Services in New York, Quality Community Support in Virginia, Emory Health Care Hospital and Georgia Tech Counseling Services, both in Atlanta, Georgia. My intrest and experience have lead me to purse a masters in conseling.What are your personal and professional goals after you recive your degree? A Masters in Human Services would afford me the educational tools needed to help me reach my professional goal of becoming a LPC. I plan on colaborating with my church to create a non profit organization to help families in crisis.

 Along with personal firsthand experience I have also worked in the field of Human Services.  I have had the pleasure of working for some of the top facilities for Human Services such as The Jewish Board of Family and Children Services in New York, Quality Community Support in Virginia, Emory Health Care Hospital and Georgia Tech Counseling Services, both in Atlanta, Georgia. In the past, I have had the ability to function as case manager, patient services representative, testing administrator and other Human Services related job roles. 

Outline how you intend to apply what you lerned previously to your master’s program at Walden ( note: it is not necessary to have previous academic experiences in the same field). 

I intend to balance all previous experience with the academic knowledge I will gian from my future classes at Walden. The ability to research new trends will allow me to keep up with the growing field. Staying compassionate and sensative to others mixed with my academics will allow me to be an effective counsleor to the clients I serve. 

Explain any inconsistencies in your academic record ( e.g., if your GPA is not what you would have liked, please explain any special personal, physical, or family circumstances that may have adversely affted your GPA).

 I acknowledge that during my previous enrolment, I did not perform to my capabilities. Unfinished chapters in my life, including the death of my Grandfather who raised me and ugly child custody battle consumed my energy. During the time that has elapsed since I was last enrolled, the child custody battle has come to a close and my family has begun the process of healing from the matriarch of our family passing away. I have learned from this process that although we cannot control the trial of life but we can control how you bounce back from it. I owe it to myself to become exactly who I’m meant to be no matter how difficult it maybe at times.  

Work/ Other Experience Describe your work, volunteer, and/or extracurricular experiences that complement your academic career goals (if you do not have directly relevant experience, please indicate this and explain how your personal and professional goals, along with your skills, interests,and personal qualities, make you a good candidate for this program).

 In the past, I have had the ability to function as case manager, patient services representative, testing administrator and other Human Services related job roles. In addition to the above roles I frequently volunteer at mental health facilities to keep my thirst for the field satisfied. My short term goal is to continue to volunteer in a variety of different functions regarding Human Services.  Functioning in a myriad of positions has fueled my desire to further my education in Human Services, enabling me to achieve an overall long term goal of becoming a LPC.  

Cross Cultural Scenario Provide an example or examples of when you interacted with individiuals and small groups of people who are different from you (e.g., ethnicially, sexual orientation, racially spirtually). 

 My church is a multicultural and nondenomenational spiritual center. All people are welcom regardless of culture, spiritual background or sexual orentaion. Discuss the importance of being culturally sensitive, and provide examples of how cultral sensitivity impacted ( or could have impacted) the outcome in the example(s) you provided. Cultural sensativity has impacted my church by showing that no matter what labels are placed on people by society we share the same need to be accepted. The best way to stay culturally sensative is by focusing on what we have in common instead of what seperates us from one another.  

Discuss the importance of self-reflection in considering and responding to issues of cultural sensitivity .Cultural sensitivity is important because it allows us to effectively function in other cultures, allows us to respect and value other cultures, and can reduce cultural barriers between professionals and their patients. Self-Relfecting on cultural sensativity helps me realize any hidden bias that are unintentional.
