You need to be able to control scope, time, cost, and quality. Differences between the plan and where you find yourself are called variances (positive or negative). It’s important to understand the source of variance.

Read Schwalbe, Chapter 8, Monitoring and Controlling Projects. Pay particular attention to Figure 8-1 regarding the activities in each of the Knowledge Areas, as well as the topic of Earned Value Management.
