be able to find enough media coverage. Select a company that currently has existing
operations in a non-U.S. based country. You will analyze the environment based on the
instructions below. The company should have international presence that you can
analyze. You can search for companies using a variety of sources like The New York Times,
Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, etc.
You will examine the hypothetical case of your company’s entry into a new
country, and show how the institutional environment of the host country and the
resources that the company already possesses or can access in the host country, have
influenced some of the company’s strategic moves or choices.
WRITTEN PROJECT REPORT
The written report serves as the Final Project for this course. The report will focus
on the country and will include a brief history, background information, and a discussion
of the country’s institutional and competitive environment. The paper should be about 912 pages long, not including the title page or references. The written report will be worth

the rubrics below is a very important component of the grade. Also, you will be graded
on composition, style, grammar and spelling, in addition to the content.

The Country and its Institutions
A. History and Background
Include a short section on the background of the country and its history. Here, you
should give basic information on the country – (i) Size – area and population, (ii)
Demographics – ethnic groups, religion, education level, urban/rural divide, prosperity
level, etc., (iii) Major exports, imports and industries, (iv) Recent history, with elements
1
of the background and history that are relevant to foreign companies entering the
country, (v) Anything else you deem relevant.
This part should be about 1.5-2 pages.
B. Formal institutions
Analyze the country’s environment in terms of its political, legal and economic
(include the GDP, GDP per capita, and recent growth rate) institutions. So, (i) describe
these institutions, and (ii) using examples, talk about the kind of pressures and
constraints, as well as the possibilities, that they could exert upon the company.
This part should be about 2.5-3 pages.
C. Informal institutions
Analyze the cultural institutions of the country’s environment. Talk about the
influence of norms (e.g. the norms regarding ethics or corruption) on the country’s
development or culture. If relevant, you may also discuss the impact of language and
religion. Describe at least 3 of these cultural dimensions: context, power distance,
individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, and long-term orientation. Similar to
formal institutions, (i) describe the characteristics of these institutions, and (ii) using
examples, discuss how these institutions could constrain and enable the company you
have chosen.
This part should be about 3-3.5 pages.
D. Competitive Environment
Briefly introduce the company. Describe the company, name its industry and identify who
its major competitors are. Describe the type of competition present in the local
environment – the number and intensity of domestic competitors and the number and
intensity of foreign competitors. What is the status of your chosen company in the
competitive arena? Why has the company been successful in this environment? This part
should be about 1.5-2 pages.
PRESENTATIONS
You will also prepare a 15-20 minute PowerPoint presentation. You can include short
news clips (e.g. video or audio) if you like.
Grading of the presentation will be based on the content of the presentation (coverage
of essential areas, use of appropriate supporting examples, flow between parts, quality
of PowerPoints, presence of images, absence of typos)
Remember you can lose points for the following reasons, among others:
1. Not meeting deadlines
2
2. Not citing any, or only a couple, of outside sources, or not citing them correctly
3. Not providing references, or not providing them in the correct format
4. “Borrowing wholesale” from an outside source – remember to cite, and the
writing must be your own.
5. Typos. I will deduct points for spelling and grammatical errors
6. Writing that is uneven, does not flow well, and does not look well put together.
