The focus of your response for this task is based on your understanding of what you learn from
the simulation concerning the production process. Remember that operations is like the engine
of the organization, that is, how the organization functions and operates on a day-to-day basis
is determined on how efficient its operations is designed. As you explore the production
process of an organization, it is important to realize what factors play a significant role in
ensuring the success of this process. Some of those factors include (but not limited to) setup
time, utilization time, production scheduling, and bottleneck. These concepts are crucial to
understand because they help you understand the functions or role of the operations
manager.
Setup time – when considering set up time, pay careful attention to the batch or number of
units to be produced during a specified time period. For example, if there is a batch size of 80
shirts per hour to be produced, this represents how long it will take to complete one batch of
shirts. Production or operations managers, then can determine the appropriate batch size in
order to ensure the relevant setup time.
Utilization time – this represents how well the production process is utilizing it resources. Bear
in mind that the utilization is always between 0% and 100%. A production manager must
ensure that all resources necessary for the production process is properly utilized (maximized)
to ensure that production success.
Production scheduling – this process deals with how operations managers control, arrange
and optimize work as well as workload in the production process. It also represents the starting
and end points of each event in the production process. Three relevant principles of scheduling
include: optimizing task size (small or large), optimizing the production plan (having equal
workload across the board), and optimizing sequences (planning the work to ensure work
hours are in the same sequence).
Bottleneck – this concept represents the production process step with the longest processing
time. Operations managers must, therefore, make production judgments based on the
capacities knowing that the bottleneck process step is the step with the lowest capacity.
As you review each of these steps in the production process be sure that you
identify the role of the operations manager in the process.
