A.
Business Profile:
1
Amazon Inc was on July 5, 1994 as a website that sold books to college students. Johnson
(2019) states “CEO Jeff Bezos’ vision for the company was that he wanted Amazon to be an
everything store.” The companies mission statement is to be earth’s most customer centric
company. Amazon also believes they should be the place where anyone can come to discover or
find what they could be searching for online. The logo that Amazon uses is an arrow from letter
A to Z. The meaning behind this is it implies that the company is ready to deliver anywhere in
the world. Amazon is 100% operated online and has never manufactured a product nor have they
owned a storefront. The website includes a wide assortment of offerings such as clothing,
automotive supplies, electronics, furniture, food etc.
Although Amazon started out as an online retailer of books, the company has grown to
become the largest e-commerce company by revenue in the United Sates. Currently, Amazon
competes for market share with major corporations worldwide. In 2018 Amazon reached a
market capitalization of $1 trillion. The company breaks down its revenue stream into 5
categories: online stores, physical stores, third-party sellers, subscription services, and Amazon
Web Services. The company has many rivals and they are: Netflix, Apple, Google (Subscription
services) Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Costco (Retail) and Oracle, Microsoft, and IBM (Web
Services) (Segal, 2020).
According to Roberta Greenspan (2019), Amazon has various threats towards its
operations in different markets. Based on the SWOT analysis she conducted on Amazon,
competition is the strongest threat against the company, another threat is imitation which could
reduce company’s market share. Based on the company’s marketing mix they currently address

the potential effects of this threat. Competitive pressure represents the strategic management
challenges in the markets for consumer electronics, retail, e-commerce, online digital content
distribution, cloud-based services, and other information technology services (Greenspan, 2019).
B.
Governmental Action:
Potential government action that will affect Amazon’s business is the e-commerce giant’s
exposure to possible antitrust litigation. For many years, the company was protected from laws
that focused on breaking up destructive monopolies. This is due in part to Amazon’s reputation
for low prices and great customer service. In 2019, Amazon faced probes into its competitive
practices from various branches of the federal government. Although they are currently being
closely monitored the worst-case scenario for Amazon would be the government breaking up its
business or restricting its practices. According to Ben Unglesbee (2019), the investigations could
shed more light on the structure of the modern retail market and one of the industry’s most feared
players. Bloomberg has reported that neither the FTC nor Amazon have confirmed the probe.
Their report follows an announcement from the department of justice stating, “they are reviewing
whether and how market-leading online platforms have achieved market power and are engaging
in practices that have reduced competition, stifled innovation, or otherwise harmed consumers.”
In March of 2020, Amazon was officially hit with an antitrust class action lawsuit. The
suit alleges that the company’s policy with third-party sellers forces them to sell their products
on other competitor’s sites at the same prices like on Amazon. The suit also says, “Amazon has
obtained monopoly power in the U.S. retail e-commerce market, as demonstrated by its power to
set the prevailing prices of the vast majority of consumer goods offered for sale on the internet
and that it exercises extraordinary control over millions of its online retail competitors”
(Bronstad, 2020).
