This overture to 1653’s Le Ballet Royal de la Nuit (Royal Dance of the Night), is from an unusually extended dramatic court celebration historically notable for featuring the debut 15-year old Louis XIV as Apollo the Sun King. It is also strongly dance-like, very characteristic of the day, and the complex and spectacular plot included mythological goddesses, demonic figures and others caught up in horrors of the night, with the heroic Sun King emphasizing the power or royalty and closeness to the divine by dispelling evil with the coming of the light. Though Lully is largely responsible for the French style, François Couperin (1668-1733) is the most influential French composer of the Baroque. He is most remembered for his fanciful keyboard suites.
