In State of Working America, we have seen the numbers, all the statistics, regarding income and wealth distribution and wage earnings in the US. There are wide disparities in all of these areas. Although the American dream is still alive to some extent, the idea that there are equal opportunities is only a fiction, a distant goal for many. Why is that the case? What lies at the root of many economic inequalities? Can it be explained in terms of the nature of our economic system? Or, do race, ethnicity, class, and gender play a more important role? Race and gender will be our main topics at the end of our semester, but we can start the discussion now and expand our discussion when we read relevant literature on these topics then.
