Individualism and Collectivism

I am an African American female, an aspect of my culture will be family, as a child I was raised to know that family represents love. When so much is happening in the world, kids are dying on the street, and we appear to outsiders to be against each other, there is always family. The black family is commonly misunderstood by mainstream America. But on the inside, we have a common understanding that family business is not to be taken lightly and we continue to uphold the seriousness of coming together in peace. Our ideals and respect for family date back to slavery, when family was all we had. Family represents love, hope, and the circle of life. Through family we remember where we came from and where we are going.

African American culture influences its members to care more about the family and other groups than other cultures does. African American are said to have more of a sense that they are all connected to one another and that what they do individually has an impact on all members of the community. It is said that African Americans tend to have stronger relationships with members of their extended families. African Americans are also more likely to use “fictive kinship” in which we see people of who are not actually related to them as members of their own family. In this case, African American culture is more collectivist.

A strong sense of self is an important characteristic in the African American family. Building positive self-esteem along with the development of ethnic awareness is continually emphasized within the African American cultural context.

Hi Patrick,
I like your perspective on the discussion.
You mentioned how the Filipino guy shared how valuable his friendship is even though he may lack material
possessions. In development life studies, it is posited that from mid-life most people in western cultures tend to
value family and friendships. (Berk, 2104 p.543). It is at that stage I think people begin to focus on what is really
important and culture begins to change. Matsumoto, (2001). I think as people mature they may go through life
circumstances and experiences through which they acquire the courage to change.
One example of this for me is an Indo-Trinidadian co-worker who follows the Hindu faith. Obedience to elders
is one of the traits of the Indian culture that is connected to agreeableness. (Sinka & Kumar, 2004). In the Indian
Hindu tradition, marriages are arranged and in Trinidad this tradition is still upheld by some. My co-worker defied
her parents and family, refused to marry the person who had been selected as her husband and ran away instead.
This example reminds me of the admonition by Laureate Education, (2007), not to equate culture with the person.
