Encyclopedias are one of the basic elements of our knowledge infrastructure. This assignment involves comparing an entry in two famous encyclopedias in the field of Religious Studies, i.e. James Hasting’s Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics (1908-1927) and Linsey Jones’ Encyclopedia of Religion (2005).
Compare the entries for one of the following lemmata:
– Vedic Religion / Vedism and Brahmanism
– Buddhism
– Taoism / Daoism
– Confucianism
How do the two encyclopedias differ in content and representation? What has remained stable?
