In this unit, you will be reading primary sources from American and African societies. As you know
from our course definition, primary sources are important because they were written by ancient people
who lived during this time period. They let us “time travel” back to see the world from a different time,
and a different point of view.
After completing this unit, you will be able to:
Analyze primary source material to understand the worldview directly from people from the
Americas and Africa
Synthesize course materials from this module to understand this time period as a whole
Apply your knowledge of World History themesto the course materials
Unit Overview: You will read three primary sources, and complete one discussion post
assignment
Valley of Mexico, Aztec Empire
1. You will read the following primary sources to be able to get a sense of how the Americas and
Africa were viewed by people who lived during the time periods we have studied.
You will read a source from the perspectives of the Aztecs and what they witnessed when the Spanish
conquered their lands.
And, you will read a source by Bernal Diaz, a Spaniard, who wrote about how he viewed the Aztecs,
and their amazing capital city, Tenochtitlan.
Finally, you will read a source written by an African write, Leo Africanus. He describes the amazing
city on the Niger River, Timbuktu, which was a center of Islamic learning and culture.
Museum (Virtual) Visit
The Americas and Africa have a rich history (both textual and in artifacts). We are lucky
enough in DC to have two museums dedicated to these cultures and their
history. Unfortunately, we cannot physically go there right now. But, lucky for us, both
the National Museum of the American Indian (Links to an external site.), and the National
Museum of African Art (Links to an external site.), have great resources online for a virtual
visit.
To complete this assignment, you must do the following part first:
1. Visit one of the above museums virtually.
2. Choose one object from their site (you can search by exhibitions, or they have some
general search functions on their site. Play around a bit to figure out what is available, and
what you are most interested in). Post this object. by either embedding an image of it, or
providing a link to it.
3. In your post about your object, address how this object connects to a Big History theme
from class. Give specific examples from class materials (primary sources, videos, Met
Timelines) in this module to support this connection you are making.
To complete this assignment, you now must respond to a post by a classmate by addressing:
1. What you find most interesting about this object.
2. Another example from our course materials in this module that support how this object
links with the major themes from our course.
Your post and response post should be 400 words in total between the two.
