Screening report. (3 x100=300) Three short papers, each a maximum of 3 to 5 pages, double-spaced with critical comments about three different films and keywords/elements from three different text chapters. What to write about:
Identify patterns: Use of repeated elements (conventions and/motifs). Repeated viewings are essential if you plan to write about the film, and so is note taking. For example:
Parallel editing or parallelism (in the Across the Universe)
Do some outside research about film editing and the particular film.
You will write your paper with 3-5 keywords in mind from the chapter (using the language of the chapter).You will supplement what you already know from the chapter with outside resources. Review the rubric for notes about outside research.
Write about one chapter covered in text/keywords to that due date and a film of your choice.
No multiple chapters for one paper.
No multiple films for one paper.
No repeating chapters or films.

Introduction:In two sentences or less state the film and chapter and give a brief synopsis of film.
Thesis:State clearly what you are reviewing for the paper. Do this by listing the keywords, in one or two sentences. In this paper I will review the use of these ___, _____, (elements) and
.etc.
Argument and specific examples:Define: 3-5 keywords (using references with in-text references). Then use examples from the film that illustrate the keywords.
An A paper will also discuss how the element is used to tell the films story. An A paper will discuss 5 keywords and techniques with examples.
An A paper might compare and contrast with another technique that could have been used. For example, the editor chose to use parallelism edits because the edit effectively links similar themes at two separate locations. Or the purpose for using this kind of an edit is to do

An A paper also goes beyond the average paper in the choice of keywords, examples used and descriptions.
An A paper uses outside research to support their findings.
No papers should use the opinions of the student to support their findings. No paper should use only outside resources to support their findings. It is required that the paper use at least the Bordwell keywords to discuss the examples.
Conclusion:Briefly review your discussion in the body of the paper. Here you can briefly add your opinion or another experts opinion to confirm your findings or to make a statement about the film.
Reference:Quotes taken from the text, other sources, any use of any quotation marks, any summarization you make from any source should be referenced by in-text citations and added to the reference page. Failure to do this will cause the paper to not be accepted.

Sentence length:
A fifteen-word sentence is average.
40 words too long. Long sentences leave a reader gasping for air by the time they read the sentence. Long sentences are not the best way to communicate. Guide the read through your ideas. Dont use conjunctions and, but, etc.
Too short can be a problem too.
Choppy flow is frustrating and there is no rhythm.
Vary sentence length.
Make some shorter and some longer. If you are trying to compare and contrast the sentence needs to be longer. To make a point use a short sentence.

Examine each paragraph to be sure that you are not repeating. If the first sentence explains all you need then dont add an entire paragraph. Combine paragraphs or sentences if needed.
Are there two or more summary points to a paragraph? Then you are being vague. Add sentences only to elaborate
Causal language can use the same words. Use the thesaurus to replace some words but be careful using too formal of words.
Replace your repeated commonly used words. Or if you use too formal of words or jargon replace some of these.
Acronyms Remind your reader what these stand for throughout the paper (longer papers).
