Your Task:

For this assignment, you will write a research paper of at least 2000 words on a topic of your choice that is connected to the class theme of “Monsters.”

Approaches:

Fictional: Look at a fictional movie, TV episode, music video, or piece of media and do a close analysis of the “monster/villain”
Historical: Look at a real-life dictator, serial killer, scientist, social network, etc. and do an analysis of the coverage of the person.
Scientific: Look at modern science e.g. cloning, Crispr, genetic modification etc. and decide whether that type of science is creating modern heroes or monsters.
Current events: Do a deep dive on a current event like border control, politics, make-up, sports, and analyize whether your topic is helping society or harming it?

The Steps:

Pick an issue related to the broad theme of “monsters” that interest you e.g something from the class or Frankenstein’s Cat.
Narrow down the topic to something you can cover in 2000+ words e.g. “Is it ethical to conduct cloning research for profit?” or “What modern fear does the monster in Birdbox represent?”
Read articles and books, and watch some media clips that interest you on that topic. Make sure to get sources you agree and disagree with
Put your sources on your source list. You must use the sources in the Annotated Bibliography.
After doing a little research, develop your topic on your issue develop a hypothesis. Basically, take a stand on how your topic impacts the local community. Hint: This will turn into your thesis.
This project will culminate in your research paper.

Kowalski hopes to establish what cyber-bullying is and its prevalence in regards to
adolescents and high school students. In this article, the author explains that people think
bullying to be physical and verbal, but the new form of bullying which is cyber-bullying has
become a very big issue in society. The author argues that the main reason as to why cyberbullying is so dangerous is the fact that unlike traditional bullying this type of bullying allows
the aggressors anonymity. In regards to anonymity, the author argues that due to the fact that
these attacks happen online through electronic devices they allow people to hide behind their
fake online profiles when facilitating their attacks. The author explains that it is hard to
estimate or even evaluate the characteristics of online bullies since they are unidentified in
most cases. This makes it harder to do in-depth research on the issue. While it is easy to
collect statistics on the issue, to understand what propels it and how to ensure that it does not
happen has proven hard. Kowalski explains that this form of online social cruelty has been
popularized by the communication patterns among teenagers. While even adults are subjected
to cyber-bullying, these incidents are most prevalent with the youths. This is because young
people are the greatest users of the internet and they spend most of their time on online
platforms. This makes it easier for them to be bullied. In expressing how this form of bullying
is similar to traditional bullying, the author argues that there is a power imbalance between

Stuckey hopes that by explaining the different situations of cyber-bullying she can influence
her readers into taking the moral paths. Cyber-bullying according to Stuckey does not only
happen to teenagers, but it also happens to adults and has the potential of affecting many
people including large organizations. Cyber-bullying can be used to facilitate crimes where
even employees in an organization are bullied or rather blackmailed to do something that can
harm their organization. Cases of cyber-bullying have affected personal lives in many ways
as the author explains that social networks are both advantageous and harmful. In this case,
she explains that social networks do a great job in enhancing connectivity where people can
reach their friends and family from all over the world electronically. While this may be a
great way of communication, it can expose a person’s life greatly where their personal
information could be acquired and used maliciously to attack them. This leads to a lot of

Daily News South Africa explains that recent statistics have shown an alarming level
of cyber-bullying in South Africa. The author explains that in research done by Ipsos in 2018,
South Africa was ranked the country with the highest amount of cyber-bullying. In the article,
the author explains a recent cyber-bullying incident where a 13 years old student in Pretoria
commuted suicide due to cyber-bullying. This shows that cyber-bullying is most prevalent in
adolescent and the youths. In this incident, the author explains the power imbalance in this
situation where the perpetrator of the attack who was also a student had threatened to post a
video of the victim naked on social media. The investigation into the case also exposed that
before that victim committed suicide, they had been bullied for a week. The author also
explains that some of the measures that have been taken in South Africa in regards to cyberbullying have included cyber-bullying insurance. A company named First for Women
developed their first insurance cover for cyber-bullying citing the need for financial and legal
support for cyber-bullying. The author explains some of the ways that parents can tell their
children’s are experiencing cyber-bullying. Some of the signs to be wary of include children
appearing edgy, nervous and easily irritable. Children would also show signs of depression
and being overly secretive. Other signs include avoiding online activities and being worried
after being online. Children may also stop using their devices completely or even begin to

activities. When parents see such signs, they must take fast action to evaluate the problem

teenagers who are the most users of these platforms. This harassment has become so
prevalent that it has warranted legal actions. The author explains that some of the examples of
cyber-bullying can fall into the category of stalking, defamation, and sexual harassment.
Posting rumors or false information about a person is seen as defamation, posting sexual
content to someone against their will can turn into sexual harassment while cyberstalking can
also earn a person jail time. Wang concludes that technology has also presented a platform
for harassment and bullying. While this is the case, law enforcement has made sure to make

challenges that people get when prosecuting these claims may be identifying the real identity
