LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSED:

?
Analyse the principles of traditional methods of construction.
Specify and design the detailed techniques and / or materials commonly used in a
conservation intervention.
Recognise and analyse the symptoms of common defects in older buildings.
ASSIGNMENT TASK:
Working from the course materials (ie: lecture notes and suggested digital reading) and
carrying out any necessary additional research required, you are asked to select an historic
building of your choice, or key element(s) thereof (agreed with the course tutor) and:
Produce a building survey report of the building describing and analysing the anticipated
original methods of construction and materials used on an element by element basis and
thereafter identifying some typical defects which could be expected based on your knowledge
of relevant historic construction.
In structuring the layout of your report, you should identify and discuss the building under five
sub headings, each of which should deal with a major building element. These sub headings
should include Foundations, External Walls, Floors / Ceilings, Roofs and one other building
element chosen by you.
Each building element should then be followed by a discussion on some typical defects for the
construction type you have described. A minimum of two common defects should be identified
and discussed under each sub heading / building element.
GUIDANCE:
The work should be presented in essay format and include any relevant diagrams, images,
illustrations and / or photography to support the work, where appropriate.
Your final essay should be a maximum of 2,000 words, excluding any appendices.
The report must be referenced in accordance with the Harvard Referencing System. This
includes in text referencing of all your sources and a full list of references at the end of the
report. Guidance on how to properly reference your work is available in Brightspace.
You are advised that the selection of the subject building is not intended to be overly specific
to that particular building, but is intended to provide some context and grounding in reality for
the purpose of this academic assessment. EG: A brick faced building means you might discuss
brick facing to walls, as opposed to stonework, whilst you would later identify some typical
defects associated with brickwork, and so on.
You are not required to gain access to the building, but ideally should do so if access is safe,
available and you have the necessary permissions from the property owner. Where internal
access is not available, reasonable assumptions can be made for the purposes of the report.
You are not required to make any recommendations regarding repairs in the report.
If your chosen building is large, it may be that your assignment will concentrate on a specific
area within the building or a key feature / element. However, where this approach is proposed,
it must be agreed with the course tutor in advance.
The chosen building (or element) must by of a different style and / or era than Assignment 1.
The best answers will demonstrate:
?
?
?
Evidence of research, reading and effort.
Evidence of understanding of historic building construction, condition and potential
defects in heritage buildings.
Production of a coherent professional report.
SUBMISSION DETAILS:
The completed report should be submitted electronically via the designated Brightspace portal
for repeat assignments on or before on the specified deadline.
In the event you experience difficulty in submitting through Brightspace, you may alternatively
submit to jimi.johnston@tudublin.ie on or before the specified deadline.
Please submit your work in .doc file format (ie: Microsoft Word) and provide a file name
beginning with your Surname, First name – Historic Building Survey – Repeat. EG: Johnston,
Jimi – Historic Building Survey – Repeat.
Students should keep a copy of the submitted work for reference purposes.
Departmental Guidelines will govern late Assignment Submissions.
Any suspected instances of plagiarism, copying work, misrepresentation or other forms of
deception will be dealt with as per Section 11: Breaches of Assessment Regulations according
to the current City Campus General Assessment Regulations.
The maximum mark for a repeat assignment is 40%, unless a valid PC1 Form has already
been received in relation to the original assignment.

GEORGIAN TECHNOLOGY – CHIMNEYS
IN REGIONAL CENTRES, EG: LIMERICK, PARTY WALLS WERE
OFTEN BUILT IN STONE RATHER THAN BRICK.
BRICK WAS STILL USED AT THE FLUES THOUGH BECAUSE
OF THE NARROW WALLING REQUIRED IE: HALF BRICK
THICK OR 100 MM.
IN THE PHOTOGRAPH OPPOSITE, STONE IS USED BETWEEN
THE FLUES RATHER THAN USING THE EASIER METHOD OF
BUILDING THE ENTIRE CENTRE OF THE WALL IN BRICK.
THIS SUGGESTS BRICK WAS VERY EXPENSIVE IN
LIMERICK COMPARED WITH RUBBLE STONE WALLING.
A FLUE CAN EVEN BE SEEN CROSSING FROM THE RETURN
TO THE CENTRAL STACK.

GEORGIAN TECHNOLOGY – FLOORS – BEAM FLOORS
THE FOLLOWING ACCOUNTS FOR ANOTHER VARIATION
WITH ENGLISH GEORGIAN CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE.
IN IRELAND, LONG JOIST SPANS ARE COMMON. IN
LEINSTER HOUSE, THERE ARE SPANS OF 5.7 METRES (19
FEET) WITH SOME PROJECTING 8 METRES INTO THE BAY.
IT WAS THOUGHT THE GIRDER SYSTEM WAS WEAKER AS
IT INVOLVED A LOT OF JOINED MEMBERS, EACH OF
WHICH MAY SHRINK AND LOOSEN THE ENTIRE
STRUCTURE.
THE DISADVANTAGE OF THE IRISH SYSTEM OF THROUGH
JOISTING IS THAT IT IS MORE FLEXIBLE AND CAN
DAMAGE THE CEILING BELOW.
104
GEORGIAN TECHNOLOGY – CHIMNEYS
THIS DUBLIN HOTEL CONTAINS ONE CHIMNEYSTACK WITH 34 FLUES AND CHIMNEY POTS OF C. 900 MM HEIGHT.
112
GEORGIAN TECHNOLOGY – STONE STAIRCASES
THESE ARE OFTEN MISLEADINGLY REFERRED
TO AS STONE CANTILEVERED STAIRS.
HOWEVER, THEY ARE NOT CANTILEVERED.
IN FACT, THEY PERFORM AS A SINGLE
SYSTEM WITH THE WEIGHT OF EACH STEP IS
CARRIED ON THE STEP BELOW AND
ULTIMATELY DOWN TO THE LANDING OR TO
THE GROUND BELOW. EACH STEP ALSO
RELIES UPON THE NEXT TO RESIST TORSION.
THEREFORE IF YOU SIMPLY REMOVE ONE
STEP OR LANDING, THEN THE ENTIRE
STAIRCASE COLLAPSES.
CASTLETOWN HOUSE, LEIXLIP, KILDARE
113
GEORGIAN TECHNOLOGY – STONE STAIRCASES
THE ENDS OF THE STEPS FORM BULKY
SQUARE END WHICH IS EMBEDDED
APPROXIMATELY 100 MM INTO THE WALL. IT
IS THIS EMBEDDED FEATURE OF THE STEPS
WHICH GAVE RISE TO THE CANTILEVERED
NAME BUT AS WE HAVE SAID, IT IS NOT
TECHNICALLY CORRECT.
STONE STAIRS CAN BE LONG, RUNNING
AROUND THE OPEN WELL OF FOUR WALLS
AND UP SEVERAL FLIGHTS WITH SOME
INVOLVING MULTIPLE LANDINGS AT BOTH
FLOOR LEVELS AND INTERMEDIATE LEVELS
WITH VERY SLIM AND GRACEFUL STEPS.
CASTLETOWN HOUSE, LEIXLIP, KILDARE
114
GEORGIAN TECHNOLOGY – STONE STAIRCASES
THE RECOGNISED PROBLEM WITH THESE TYPES OF STAIRS CAME TO PUBLIC
PROMINENCE IN 2007 WHEN A STONE STAIRCASE COLLAPSED IN THE NATURAL
HISTORY MUSEUM. INJURY CLAIMS ARISING HAVE SINCE REACHED C. €1 MILLION.
THIS AND OTHER NEAR MISSES
RESULTED FROM GRADUAL WEAR
AND TEAR ON THE THREAD
NOSING’S FOLLOWED BY PART
SPLICED REPLACEMENT, WHICH
UNINTENTIONALLY WEAKENS THE
STAIRCASE AS AN OVERALL UNIT,
LEADING TO EVENTUAL FAILURE.

GEORGIAN TECHNOLOGY – TIMBER STAIRCASES
THE WEIGHT OF TIMBER STAIRCASES CAN BE
RELATIVELY INDEPENDENT OF THE ADJOINING
STAIRWELL WALLS.
TIMBER STAIRS ARE USUALLY CARRIED BY TIMBER
CARRIAGE BEAMS OR RUNNERS. THESE SPAN
BETWEEN THE LANDINGS WHILST THE INDIVIDUAL
THREADS AND RISERS ARE SUPPORTED ON TIMBER
BRACKETS AND BLOCKS.
THE STRING OF THE STAIR MAY ALSO CARRY ALL OR
PART OF THE WEIGHT, PARTICULARLY IN A CLOSED
STRING STAIRCASE.
VARIETY OF STAIR CONFIGURATIONS
117
GEORGIAN TECHNOLOGY – TIMBER STAIRCASES
PIECES OF TIMBER BLOCKS FIXED FROM THE RUNNERS
SUPPORT THE THREADS AND RISER. NOTE ONE OF THE
BLOCKS IS MISSING.
VIEW FROM TOPSIDE
TWO RUNNERS SPAN BETWEEN LANDINGS
118
GEORGIAN TECHNOLOGY – TIMBER STAIRCASES
CLOSED STRING STAIRS AND RELATIVELY SIMPLE
STAIRCASES, PAIRED NEWELL POSTS AND RAMPED
HANDRAILS GENERALLY INDICATE EARLIER
EXAMPLES OF TIMBER STAIRS
OPEN STRING STAIRS WHICH ARE MORE
COMMONLY ACCOMPANIED BY MORE DELICATE
AND ELABORATE BALUSTRADING AND SWEEPING
HANDRAILS SUGGEST A LATER STAIRCASE.
THE ONLY CAUTION WHEN TRYING TO DATE A
STAIRCASE BASED ON STYLE IS REMEMBER TO
ALSO CONSIDER THE STATUS OF THE HOUSE AND
PARTICULAR ROOM.

CLOSED STRING, RAMPED HANDRAIL AND
PAIRED NEWELL POSTS.

SIMPLE SQUARE BALUSTERS AND NEWELL.
