International Law Enforcement Systems
The law enforcement system in the U.S. is in some ways unique because it is comprised of policing agencies at the local, state, and federal levels. Most European nations have a law enforcement system that includes a national police force that maintains control and polices throughout the country. If the U.S. system worked this way, the FBI would respond to domestic disputes in local neighborhoods and enforce traffic laws. In aIDition, the laws that are enforced the most vary from country to country. In the U.S. and many other countries, the police spend a considerable amount of time enforcing laws against illegal drug use. In Holland and more specifically, Amsterdam, the police are less concerned with enforcing illegal drug use. In this Discussion, you further explore how the law enforcement system in the U.S. compares to law enforcement systems in other countries.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Review Chapters 12, 10 and 3 of your course text, Policing America: Challenges and Best Practices. Pay attention to the organization and structure of the law enforcement system in the United States. Consider how duties are shared between federal and state agencies and municipal and county agencies. Note what types of crime each agency targets as well as the day-to-day operations of each agency.
Select a country (other than the U.S.) to use for this assignment.
Using the Internet or the library, research the criminal justice system in the country you selected. Pay attention to the history and organization of the country’s law enforcement system. Note: The World Factbook of Criminal Justice System located in this week’s resources may be particularly helpful for researching criminal justice systems in other countries
Consider the similarities and differences between the law enforcement systems of the United States and the country you selected.
