I hope my post is organized in a way that is easy to follow and understand. Please let me know if you need any clarification.

I feel that more people need to discuss this exact topic, or these topics. We all need to have a more solid grasp of unethical behavior and human rights. We all need to be more empathetic and understanding of how we are treating each other.

Definition of Unethical Behavior:

Unethical behavior is behavior and actions that effect the life and feelings of others in a negative way (Paul & Elder, 2012). As an individual, it is important that one is aware of their actions and how their actions We are aware of social mores and norms, and though certain actions are socially acceptable, it does not mean that actions are ethical. It is important that people able to control their behaviors and actions.

Example:

When we think of unethical behavior, we usually think about how this goes against the social norms and can hurt another person. There are many basic examples that we can talk about, such as lying, manipulation, and deception. I feel that all of these examples can be rectified by teaching children how to be honest and ethical at a young age and actually punishing them if they do not. Children, as stated by Paul & Elder (2012) are very aware of when they are treated unethically and need to be guided when they treat others unethically (p. 346).

A more specific example of unethical behavior would be the more recent situations with famous families paying money to have their children get into colleges that they are not qualified to attend. Some of the families paid people to help their children cheat on their entrance exams or pre-qualifying exams. Some families paid athletic departments to say that their children competed in a specific sport, when they did not. Any type of lying and cheating is inherently unethical. The only way to rectify this type of situation is to change the rules and the vetting process for entrance and acceptance into college. I do feel that the punishments that these families received are “good”, but I do feel that the consequences should be more severe.

Definition of Violation of Human Rights:

In order to under what the violation of human rights and understanding of human rights is important. Human rights are associated with more legal terms and treating all humans equally (Narcisco & Mezzaroba, 2012). A violation of a human right would be any type of action that infringes upon a person’s legal rights. There will be unethical behavior that comes with the violation of human rights, but there is a difference between the two.

Example:

An example of the violation of human rights would be human trafficking. This is something that happens to people of all ages. There are many rights that are violated and many unethical behaviors that are attached to this example, but I am going to try to concentrate on the violation of human rights only. When a person is taken and sold, or born and sold into sex trafficking, they have become property. Paul and Elder (2012) gave a brief summer on page 352 of the list of human rights that came from “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights”. On this list, it states that a person cannot be sold into slavery or subject to any sort of inhumanity by another. There are a few rights that are violated when someone is made to be a part of human trafficking, and it is hard to just talk about these two, but this is what I will mention. Human trafficking is disgusting and deplorable… nobody should be forced to something that violates they human rights.

In regard to rectifying this situation, it is difficult. However, law enforcement is continuously working on this issue. Also, I feel that the more we educate people on this situation and bring light to this situation, the less likely people will be to participate. If we start to make this issue more mainstream, and really push to figure out who is behind this, more people will be aware. We can educate the younger generation so they are more cautious, and we can expose the people that are responsible. Once the people that are responsible are exposed, they will start giving the information needed to catch all of the others that are a part of this disgusting web.

As I stated before, unethical behavior and violation of human rights are very much intertwined. A person can act unethically and bother people, but not violate their human rights. Nobody should be lied to or deceived, but it does happen. However, when human rights are violated, there is always unethical behavior. I truly feel that the main way this can be handled is to start teaching children about respect for others and empathy at a very young age. Also, children need to see the consequences of their actions when they act unethically. Maybe, we can treat the problem before it gets started, if that makes sense.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post,

Jennifer
