1. Drug Classification:  What KIND of drug is it? Can you create a method to remember the name of the drug in connection to the drug’s classification?  What does this class of medication do? 2. MECHANISM OF ACTION:  Determine what the direct action of this medication will be. VERY IMPORTANT THAT THIS IS ACCURATE! 3. Uniqueness:  Determine what is unique about the drug or different from other medications in the same class 4. Assessment Data /Indications (signs & symptoms)/Diagnoses:  Review indications for use of this medication.  List likely MED SURG  diagnoses for which use of the drug may be indicated; list assessment data to support the use of the drug 5. Therapeutic Response:  How will the RN know the desired therapeutic effect(s) has/have been achieved? 6. Side Effects:  List COMMON, EXPECTED side effects. 7. Adverse Effects:  Identify assessment data which indicates presence of adverse drug events. 8. Client’s at Risk/Contraindications:  When is this drug contraindicated?  Which clients will be at risk for developing serious adverse affects from the drug? 9. Nursing Concerns:  Besides SE and AE, what will the RN be looking for in a patient on this drug? 10. Patient Education:   What will be important for the patient and family to know about this drug? 11. Complications:If there is a problem with receiving this medication, what does the nurse need to do?
