Instructions: After reading the textbook chapter, answer the prompts below. To receive full credit, each response should be written as a complete paragraph (5-7 sentences in length) and incorporate key concepts and vocabulary from the textbook. Save the file to your computer, and then upload a copy to Canvas to submit your responses. Be prepared to share some of your thoughts during our class discussion.
Give an example of a time that you had a conversation with someone in which their nonverbal communication gave a different message than their verbal communication. Which message left a stronger impression on you? How did the nonverbal messages impact your conversation?
Find a video clip (perhaps from a TV show or movie that you have seen recently) that shows someone using nonverbal communication really clearly fulfilling one of the six functions of nonverbal communication that you read about. Share a link to the clip or describe the scene. Then, explain how the nonverbal communication in that scene fulfills one of the functions and explain how that impacted the interaction.
Describe a time that nonverbal communication had a negative impact on a conversation that you had with another person. How could you have used one of the five guidelines for nonverbal communication to maintain a more dialogic environment during that conversation?
